About Brent Rathgeber, QC

Born in Melville, Saskatchewan, in 1964, Brent Rathgeber has been a relentless force in the legal arena. After graduating from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Laws, he was admitted to the Law Society of Alberta in 1991, where his practice predominantly focused on litigation.

Brent's distinguished career includes:
- Serving as the MLA for Edmonton-Calder in the Alberta Legislature in 2001.
- Chairing the 2002 Review of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation.
- Earning the prestigious appointment as Queen's Counsel in 2001 (later redesignated as King's Counsel in 2022) for his legal skill and community service.
- Representing Edmonton-St. Albert in the Parliament of Canada from 2008 to 2015, where he contributed five years to the House of Commons Justice Committee and played a crucial role in the Supreme Court of Canada Selection Committee.
- Publishing the insightful book "Irresponsible Government—The Decline of Parliamentary Democracy in Canada" in 2014.
- Receiving the title of "Member of Parliament who best represents Constituents" by Maclean's Magazine in 2014.

A Transition to Mediation, Collaborative Law, and Arbitration

After leaving public life in 2015, Brent Rathgeber rechanneled his legal prowess into mediation, collaborative law, and arbitration. His dedication to resolving disputes earned him appointments to prestigious roles such as the Edmonton Assessment Review Board and Ethics Advisor to Edmonton City Council.

In 2019, Brent joined the Alberta Insurance Council (AIC), where he now serves as Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, regulating insurance intermediaries in Alberta.

Community Involvement and Personal Pursuits

Brent remains actively engaged in the community, serving on the Northern Alberta Business Incubator (NABI) Board and contributing to causes in St. Albert and Sturgeon County. In his personal life, he enjoys sports, music, nonfiction reading, and spending time with his beloved Beagle, Fozzie Bear.
